Online petitions are a great tactic to gain support for your campaign. With Campaignion you can create petitions just as easily as writing a blogpost on Wordpress, for example.
A petition is an action, so you can create a new petition by going to your toolbar at the top, click "New" and choosing "Petition" in the left column. Now you've landed on the first step to create your petition. The settings of the action are split into several sections, and you can see your progress through the various steps towards the completion of the setup at the top of the page. On the top right a "Next" button enables you to save your changes on the current step and to reach the next step. Let's go through every step:
On this step, you can set up the content of the petition: which title should the petition have? What is the petition about? And a whole lot of useful other features can be set up here.
Campaignion can be multilingual. If your Campaignion only has one language, then you can ignore this setting ;) Otherwise, you can choose here to assign any of the enabled languages to your petition. If your preferred language is not enabled, check out to support.
If you've set up a whole campaign with several sites, first create a campaign in Campaignion and then link it to your new petition using this field. A campaign in Campaignion is used to group actions related to a same topic. Then, it is easier for you to find and organize your actions if you group them as campaigns. If you only want this petition to standalone, you can leave this field blank.
Enter here the title of your petition. It will be displayed as it is to your supporters and it will be used by default to create the URL alias (the link) of your petition. We recommend to keep it short and simple!
Large image or video
This field on the right side gives you the possibility to upload or pick an existing video or image to be displayed on the petition. If you prefer, you can also choose to display a video from Youtube or Vimeo by simply providing the link. Per default, this image will be used in teasers and it will have a special design. For a better rendering, we recommended the image format to have a width-to-height ratio of 1.6 to 1.65. More about the images in Campaignion here.
This is a text field with lots of options, it's the place for your main content, so enter here why the supporters should submit this petition!
You can edit the summary of your body field if you click the small link "Edit summary" just right to the title of the field. If leave this preview text blank, Campaignion will help you out and just take the first few lines of the body text. Per default, the content of the summary field text will be used in the Google, Facebook and Twitter teasers.
In your "body" you can throw in long copy, bullet points and the usual stuff you would put on a website. Of course you can also just paste HTML by clicking on the "source" button in the editor. You can also add pictures there, using the "Media browser" on the top right of the field. For more help on the text options, you can have a look here.
Counters are fun! Activate the counter to display the progress of your petition towards its goal!
With every new submission on the petition, the counter will go up. It automatically ships the goal values with the increasing number of submission. There are some default goal values and text to encourage the supporters to sign the petition, but if you want it customized them, here you go: More about the counter.
Another way of encouraging supporters to sign this petition is to display a block that shows the names of the most recent supporters who have signed your petition. You can then suggest them to add their names to this list!
Activate the "" checkbox to display this block, and open the "Recent supporters advanced settings" to update the maximum number of displayed supporters, let them cycle or choose how the names, and countries should be displayed.
Look at the "advanced settings" to:
- create a nicer URL alias for your petition,
- segment the supporters taking this action via tags,
- publish the petition
- promote it on the front page (if a list of promoted actions is displayed there).
In general, these advanced settings can be used to configure how your petition integrates with the rest of your Campaignion. Drop a line to support if you have any further question on these!
Open Graph meta Tags settings
Here are the options for the integration of this page with other Internet pages, such as Google, Facebook, Twitter and co. More information on this section can be found here.
Now that we went through all options regarding the petition content, lets go to the next step and click on "Next" on the top right of the page!
This is where you can actually set up the petition form :)
Add the fields you need to collect the information you need from your supporters. It's a good idea to always ask for the first name, last name and their email address. Keep it simple, short forms will lead to more people taking action!
As there is quite a lot to explain here, have a look on how to use the form builder.
Once you're done here, hop on to the next step by clicking again on the "next" button on the top right of the page.
Emails are a nice tool to get your supporters engaged and excited about your petition. A few emails can be sent to the supporter that just signed the petition or to another persons:
- Confirmation emails (double opt in): Activate the "" option if you want your supporters to confirm that their submitted email address is valid. Then, your supporters will get an email after filling out your form with a link to confirm their signature. Their signature will not be counted until they clicked on this link.
- Thank you emails: The "Enable a thank you email" option can be used to automatically send a friendly email to everyone who has signed the petition. This is how you can send them a personalised thank you for their support!
- Notification emails: The "can be used this to notify someone about this form submission. For example, if you've set up a "volunteer now" form, you might someone from your organisation to receive an email right away to inform that there is some interest.
To read more about the email option, here it is: More about emails.
Now that we have set up the emails, you have to decide where your supporters will land after they filled out the form, for example on a thank you page.
This step lets you choose where people end up after filling out a form. You can either provide a URL (the link) to an existing page (any page on the web, really) with the "" option, or you can "create a new thank you page".
Should you be interested in thank you page conditional redirects, use the "
If you decide to create a new thank you page here, here is a bit more about the options Campaignion offers. The "Title", "Large image or video" "Summary" and "Body" fields behave the same way as the ones on the content step. Some special features of thank you pages are:
Giving your supporters the possibility to share the petition with their friends, family or in their social networks in very important! It will increase the interest in your petition and with it, the number of signatures. You can achieve this in Campaignion by showing share icons on the thank you page.
First, open the Share block, and switch the "on. Update the title to "Share me!" or something that works well for your supporters. If you want another page than the one of this petition to be shared, then specify which URL (the link) in the "URL to be shared" field. Per default, the URL to be shared is the URL of the petition linked to this thank you page.
Open the advanced share options to enable or disable certain channels or to updated the text of the default Tweet to be shared. The Facebook share options will use the "Open Graph meta tags" options defined on the content step of the petition. More details on the share options can be found here!
When you're done setting up a nice Thank you page for your supporters click "Next" and you'll end up on the confirmation screen.
This steps is here for you to double-check if you're fully set! Review your content, your form, your emails and your thank you page and then click on "Publish now" to confirm the changes and publish your petition or click on "Save as draft" to keep it unpublished or to unpublish it. For testing the petition, you can just "save as draft" and submit the form.
Note: Facebook and Twitter shares won't be updated until the action has been published.
We wish you all the best for your petition!
