Online petitions are a great tactic to gain support for your campaign. With Campaignion you can create petitions just as easily as writing a blogpost on Wordpress, for example.
A petition is an action, so you can create a new petition by going to your toolbar at the top, click "New" and choosing "Petition" in the left column. Now you've landed on the first step to create your petition. The form has several sections, at the top you see the steps you have to take to complete setting up your petition and on the right a "Next" button, underneath you see several fields for your content. Let's go through every field:
Campaignion is multilingual. If you just need one language you can ignore this setting. Here you can choose any of the enabled languages for your petition. If your preferred language is not enabled, check out further documentation on installation or get more info about advanced settings.
If you've set up a whole campaign with several sites, here is the place to relate your new petition to your campaign. It's easier for you to find and organize your sites if you group them as campaigns. If you only want one petition to run, you won't need this.
This is the title as displayed to your supporters and by default it will be used in the URL (the link) of your petition. Keep it short and simple.
Large image or video
This field on the right side gives you the possibility to upload or pick an existing video or image that goes along with your petition. You can also choose to display a youtube or vimeo video by simply providing the link. This image or video will show up on your petition page. You can also add images and videos to the content area of your petition but this one will be used in teasers and it will have a special design.
Write a few short sentences to give your readers a quick impression of what petition is all about.
This is a text field, it's the "body" of your petition. This is the place for your main content. You can edit the summary of your body field if you click the small link just behind the title of the field "Edit summary" (this is useful if you want to control the teaser preview text). If leave this preview text blank, Campaignion will help you out and just take the first few lines in your introduction field.
In your "body" you can throw in long copy, bullet points and the usual stuff you would put on a website. Of course you can also just paste HTML by clicking on the "HTML" button in the editor.
Counters are fun! The counter will display your progress towards the goal. With every new submission of your petition the counter will go up. It already ships with default values and is usable out of the box, but if you want it customized, here you go: More about the counter
You can display a block that shows the names of the recent supporters who have signed your petition. You can set a maximum number of displayed supporters and let them cycle. If you choose to show their countries, a little flag will appear next to their name.
Here you can control the URL and configure how your petition integrates with the rest of your page. These are advanced settings, you probably won't need them. If you're interested and puzzled by the options you might want to get more info about it on drupal.org before editing.
Now we went through all options on this page, lets go to the next one! Click "Next"!
You can either choose an existing form template by choosing a template and hitting the Apply Template button or you drag and drop fields from the left into the form. Just collect the information you need from your supporters. It's a good idea to always ask for the first name, last name and their email address. Keep it simple, short forms will lead to more people taking action.
Get your preferred form together and hop on to the next step:
To get your supporters engaged and excited about your petition email is very important. You will get their email-addresses through your form, now what?:
- Enable email confirmation (double opt in): Confirm the validity of the submitted email address before the petition is counted as submitted. If you check this, your supporters will get an email after filling out your form with a link to confirm it.
- Enable a thank you email: Automatically send a friendly mail to everyone who has taken action. You can say thank you and ask them to share your action with their friends!
- Enable a notification email: You can use this to notify someone about this form submission. If you've set up a "volunteer now" form you might want an organizer to receive an email right away.
If you enable any of these emails they all provide the same functionality: More about emails
Now that we have set up our emails, we want to decide where our supporters will land after they filled out the form. The thank you page.
THANK YOU step
This next step lets you choose where people end up after filling out a form. You can either provide a URL (the link) to an existing page (any page on the web, really), or create a thank you page.
You are already familiar with your "large Image or video" and "body" field. They behave the same way as with the petition. New are the following fields:
Display Share block
Very important! You want your supporter to share your petition after they signed it? Chances are that your supporters will share it and you will get more signatures this way. You can achieve that by showing share icons on the thank you page.
If you switch the Share block on, you have several options: You can change the title of the share-box (to "Share me!" or something that works well for your supporters) and you can specify the URL (the link) that should be shared. Per default its the url of the your petition.
There are also advanced share options, where you can enable/disable certain channels (Facebook, Twitter, Email) and change the tweeted text. The Facebook share option will use the "Open Graph Meta Tags" of the action page for the Facebook preview.
When you're done setting up a nice Thank you page for your supporters click "Next" and you'll end up on the confirmation screen.
double-check if you're set! Either publish it or save it as draft. If you want to preview the action you can just "save as draft" and you'll be able to browse through your action.
All the best for your petition!
